Transformers - Robots In Disguise
Transformers
Transformers was the landmark 80’s cartoon series that made it worth getting out of bed on Saturday mornings. It depicts the war between two opposing forces of giant robots; the good Autobots and the evil Decepticons. The show was first aired in UK in early 1985 and introduced us to the world of the Transformers.
Tranformers: Season One
Season One introduced us to the Autobots, and their leader Optimus Prime and his evil counterpart Megatron and his Decepticons.
The premise of Season One is that the giant robots crash landed on present day (1985) Earth and waged battle on one another to gain the resources they need in order to take them back to their home world Cybertron.
In order to travel around Earth without causing alarm, both sides can transform into vehicles, traditionally the Autobots transform into cars, trucks, etc. While the Decepticons transform into planes, helicopters, and in the case of Megatron, a gun.
Season One also introduces us to the fan favourites, the Dinobots! This group of robots can, as their name suggests, transorm into dinosaurs and are lead by their leader Grimlok.
Tranformers: Season Two
Following the unexpected success of Season One, the TV execs behind Transformers created a following series with a massive 49 episodes! Series Two tended to focus its episodes on an individual character, fleshing out their stories and introducing many new characters to our screens, and toys to our toy boxes. It was during the airing of Season Two when everyone went to school on Monday morning eager to dissect the latest episodes and re-enact the episode in the playground. This basically involved lots of us running around shooting each other with lasers and making the ‘transforming noise’ as we ‘transformed’ into cars or jet fighters.
Tranformers: The Movie
The amazing Transformers: The Movie fits in during the gap of Seasons Two and Three. The Movie is based more in space than on Earth and I think this helped free the creatures imagination, and the result is this excellent piece of eighties nostalgia. While famous for being the great Orson Welles' last role before passing away, there is a great cast of voices including Judd Nelson, Eric Idle and Leonard Nimoy, and music that is SO Eighties including a song from Eighties legend Weird Al Yankovich.
Tranformers: Season Three
Season Three carries on directly from the Movie and is based in space, these episodes don't match up to anything pre-Movie, but they are still worth watching as they are a continuation of the whole Transformers saga. Unlike Season Two, Three has more inter-episode continuity and this makes for great story telling, and if you're a fan of the Movie (and who isn't?), Season Three expands on some of the characters introduced in the movie.
Tranformers: Season Four
Season Four is pretty much only notable for the introduction of Head Masters and the Target Masters, which were great toys. Season Four is only 3 continuous episodes and therefore is pretty much a second movie.
